Enactus SXC launched Project Uthaan on February 25, 2022, to address the socioeconomic challenges faced by Ghoramara Island, West Bengal. Plagued by cyclones, rising water salinity, crop failures, and a dwindling population due to lost livelihoods, the island’s residents struggle with poverty and inadequate infrastructure. The project introduces Spirulina cultivation-a nutrient-rich algae with proven health benefits like regulating blood sugar, lowering cholesterol, and enhancing immunity-as a sustainable livelihood solution. Spirulina’s demand in pharmaceuticals and wellness industries offers residents a viable income source. Beyond economic empowerment, the initiative prioritizes improving access to clean water, sanitation, education, and healthcare, fostering long-term resilience and community development. By aligning environmental adaptability with commercial viability, Project Uthaan aims to create lasting socioeconomic upliftment for Ghoramara’s population.
